How Fan Travel Shapes the Carbon Footprint of Sporting Events

The impacts of climate change are increasingly evident in the world of sports, posing threats such as flooded pitches, play delays due to wildfires, and athletes grappling with heat-exhaustion. Recent data from the Met Office revealed that June marked the hottest month on record in the UK, with climate change identified as the driving force behind these unprecedented high temperatures. This comes on the heels of last July's recording of extreme temperatures exceeding 40°C, signaling an extraordinary heatwave.

A significant contributor to the carbon footprint of sporting events is fan travel. Studies indicate that over 85% of greenhouse gas emissions associated with major sports gatherings result from travel and guest accommodation. Further research stemming from Sky's Game Zero in 2021 disclosed that a staggering 93% of emissions during the matchday were attributed to fan travel and accommodation. Game Zero notably stood as the world's inaugural net zero carbon football match at an elite level.

Join us in making a positive impact on the environment while enjoying the benefits of convenient and affordable train travel.
